Some questions adults might ask about the Davis Dyslexia Correction® course How long does it take? The total length of the course is 36 hours and usually runs from a Monday to a Friday (30 hours) with a further review day some time after the course (6 hours). If you are local, this can be flexible. It is possible to do the course over several weeks if you prefer. Does it work for everyone? It is important that the motivation and a willingness to make change is there. The student will also want to make sure that we can work together. Will I be able to do everything I want to do after 30 hours? The course is not a quick fix, neither are there any guarantees. Ron Davis has made some remarkable discoveries about the causes of dyslexia. The course starts the process of change. By the end of the initial 30 hours, the student should understand how to use the tools and complete the changes he/she wants to make. There is some further work to do at the end of the course. How long this takes is up to the individual student. Am I too old? Provided you want to make changes, you are never too old. Can I talk to other people who have done the course? Yes, just ask and you can be put in touch. I have overcome a lot of difficulties I had as a child, like reading and writing. The course isnt about that, is it? You will be invited to talk through a detailed profile form with me and according to that and a discussion of your goals, the course will be tailored to what you need. I have survived this far, whats the point in doing it? If you feel that there isnt anything that bothers you about your dyslexia, there is no point. Its only if you want to make changes. I have got all these techniques for coping: ways of remembering and of getting by. The thought of losing those is frightening. They are part of me now. That is understandable. With this course, you are in charge. You wont replace anything unless theres a better way of doing it. People dont. Its a gradual process. The course starts that process. What do I do next? If you want to take things further, the next stage is to make an appointment for an assessment interview. This takes about two hours. I will complete a profile and talk through what you want from the course. I will also do an exercise as described in the book The Gift of Dyslexia to find out about how you visualise. There is a charge of £70 for the assessment interview. It is an opportunity for you to explore the issues and there is no obligation to take things further if you decide it is not for you at this time. My employers might pay for this course, how does that work? If you think your employers might pay for the course, mention this at the assessment interview. I will then talk to you about the nature of your work and how dyslexia is affecting your work both positively and negatively. I will then write up the results of the interview and send it to you for approval. You can then approach your employer with the report. Many employers have been willing to pay for this course, especially if they have the Investors in People award. |
