Some common dyslexia characteristics in adults

This checklist is not an assessment. Each individual is different, therefore you will probably find only some of the characteristics apply.

Educational Background

  • Found some or all aspects of schooling difficult
  • Particular difficulties with English and/or maths
  • Late learning to read
  • Writing difficulties
  • Late learning to tell the time
  • Difficulties remembering what was learnt at school. (May have “gaps”)
  • Did much better in course work than in examinations
  • Accused of day dreaming or being lazy
  • Had to work very hard
  • Achieved qualifications later than peers.

Writing

  • Handwriting problems
  • Difficulties expressing thoughts in writing (will have lots of ideas but can’t “get it down”)
  • Misses out words, word endings or misuses the small words
  • Difficulties proof reading
  • Finds writing very frustrating and slow
  • Can’t “keep to the point” when writing.

Reading

  • Has to re-read to understand the text
  • Tendency to lose concentration
  • May misread
  • May forget what has been read
  • Avoids reading where possible.

Spelling

  • Persistent problems with spelling
  • Problems with words that sound the same but are spelled differently
  • Spelling rules mean nothing
  • Letters missed out, repeated or reversed
  • Writes what is not intended.

Punctuation

  • Persistent problems with punctuation

Grammar

  • Finds it confusing

Maths

  • May be good at maths
  • If maths difficult, will have problems retaining the information and will have to rely on rote learning
  • Problems with place value
  • Problems with directions
  • Difficulties learning times tables
  • Reverses numbers
  • Can’t do mental maths
  • Confusion with the symbols
  • Can get the answers but can’t show the workings out

Behaviour/Emotions

  • Lacking confidence
  • Listening problems
  • Stress related illnesses
  • Allergies
  • Short fuse
  • No sense of time
  • Lacks focus
  • Organisation difficulties
  • Lacking in co-ordination: often falling or knocking things over
  • Problems expressing self in speech.

Time

  • Doesn’t have a sense of the passage of time
  • Time problems (always trying to catch-up with self and often late or, conversely, can be hyperactive.)

Organisation

Problems in this area will result in feeling constantly disorganised or, conversely, obsessively ordered.

Sequence

If there are difficulties with this, it will manifest in getting numbers out of sequence, experiencing difficulties learning dance steps or other such movements and finding it very hard to prioritise.

  • Good at sports
  • Thinks in an original way
  • Highly intuitive
  • Very aware of environment
