The Davis Dyslexia Correction Course ®

So… what’s different?
– the course is creative and fun
– it deals with the cause of dyslexia
– it puts you in control

You will understand:
  • yourself!
  • your gift
  • how to “turn off” dyslexia
  • how to learn
  • what dyslexia is all about

Too good to be true? See what our students say.

The breakthrough
As a result of finding out about his own dyslexia, Ron Davis made some new discoveries:

Dyslexia is not “something wrong with the brain”.

It is a distortion of perception.

Dyslexia is not a “learning disability”.

It is a different way of learning.

Successful and creative people are not successful and creative despite dyslexia,

they are successful and creative because of it.

 Dyslexic learners are not slow,

they haven’t found their way of learning yet.

Ron Davis believes that dyslexia is a result of an inherent mental gift or talent. People who develop dyslexia think in pictures, rather than words; they are imaginative and creative and they try to solve problems by looking at the whole picture, rather than working step-by-step. The correction programme relies on using the mental talents that dyslexic people share to overcome the learning problems. To do this, students must learn to follow a different approach to learning which suits their learning style.

When dyslexic students recognise their mental talents, they develop a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence. When they start to employ study methods which capitalise on their talents, progress is very rapid. Some of the ways that the DavisSM Dyslexia Correction Programme differs from other programmes are:

This course uses the three dimensional learning style of the dyslexic student
Conventional methods are based on the idea there is something wrong with the student who needs to learn how not to be dyslexic. These methods are based on the idea that there is something
different which is of great value that can be worked with to understand language and maths.

It does not rely on instruction based phonics
Since dyslexic students think in pictures, they have difficulty thinking with the sounds of words and thus it is difficult for them to try to read by breaking down words into component sounds.

It does not rely on repetition or drill
Dyslexic students have a hard time remembering things that they do not fully understand. Repetition and drill are a waste of time for them, and only increase their frustration because they will not retain information unless they understand where it fits into the "big picture."

The Davis methods deal with the causes of the problems dyslexics have, not the symptoms.

Other aspects of dyslexia
Davis facilitators are trained to deal with specific aspects of dyslexia such as hyper-activity, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.

The Course
The course is always offered on a "one to one" basis. (Facilitator and student). It usually runs for five days and if the student is a child, the person who will be supporting the child after the course, is shown how to do the support during the final afternoon. Some time after the course has taken place, between one and three months, there is a further review day. This gives an opportunity to see how everything is going and deal with any issues that may have arisen. The support person or the student can make as much contact with the facilitator as is required, since everyone wants the course and future progress to be a success.

From the time the student meets the facilitator, the student is "in the driving seat" and is the one who decides where he/she wants to go. The facilitator is simply the driving instructor who will show the driver how to get towards his/her destination. Sometimes the facilitator may use the dual controls but as the week progresses, the facilitator gradually lets the student take over all of the controls.

After the course, the driver (student!) is ready to go but is likely to need someone in the back seat who might help with a bit of navigating if asked, and also provide some support along the way. There are many destinations and the course can include more than one. All that is required of the student is that he/she has a destination in mind and wants to travel. All that is required of the support person is that he/she helps the student on the journey. There is no place for the support person who wants to convince the driver that he/she needs a different destination. There is no place for the support person who wants to be at the wheel because then it becomes the support person's journey.

More information on the programme and the background to it is outlined in "The Gift of Dyslexia" by Ronald D. Davis (© 1994) published by Souvenir Press, available from Amazon.co.uk.

“The theories and procedures in this book were developed not to explain the nature of the problems but to explain why it could be corrected…because I used 'hindsight' and because I have first hand experience of being dyslexic, mine is an entirely different perspective… dyslexia is not the result of brain damage or nerve damage, nor is it caused by malformation of the brain, inner ear or eyeball. Dyslexia is the product of thought and a special way of reacting to the feeling of confusion.”
