Some questions employers might ask Dyslexia is something associated with children, how could a course help an adult? Adults who are dyslexic have usually developed strategies to enable them to gain qualifications and to do their job. Sometimes it is difficult to recognise that the individual is dyslexic. If the individual is managing everything well, there is no reason to do a course. If however it is an obstacle to doing the job well or to progressing in the organisation, then it might be worth considering. How would I recognise whether an employee is dyslexic? This is a big question, but you might notice one or more of the following:
Isnt dyslexia about reading and writing? It can be but a dyslexic person might also have difficulties with focus, organisation, time, memory, etc. These impact on the workplace as well as in the individuals life. The course will deal with the issues that the client wants to change. The goals will be negotiated before the start of the course. Will this course make a difference in the workplace? Part of the course can deal directly with work-based issues if appropriate. Whats different about these methods? These methods are based on the discoveries made by Ronald Davis, himself a dyslexic. The techniques deal with the causes of dyslexia rather than offering ways around it. The difference in the learning style of the dyslexic is harnessed rather than attempts made to change it. What about computer software? If required, a tutorial on specific, useful software can be included in the course. In the event, a report on recommendations, specifications of hardware and cost will be provided. We dont know much about dyselxia in the company I am also a trainer and can offer dyslexia awareness seminars or informal consultations to suit the company. What differences can I expect? The employee has to want to do the course. If the individual has the motivation to make the changes that he/she has identified, you should see changes in those areas and an increase in the confidence of the individual. How long is the course? The course is 5 days, one to one. There is an additional review day two months after the course to check on progress. There is follow-up work to be done. Commitment to the course involves commitment to the whole process including the follow-up work. Where is the course held? The course is held in Oxford, just off the A34 ringroad.
